About editions
Tuesday, March 06, 2007

Editions allow you to give preference to the content you're interested in. If you are a new visitor, or haven't selected a particular edition, you will be taken randomly to one of five editions until such a time that you select 'Make edition default' at the top of the page.

The five editions are:
By making an edition default, you can still get to all content on Coaster Kingdom, but you will find content such as the 'Ride Reviews' panel being orientated towards your chosen ride type. If you have selected Coaster Edition, for example, expect to find recent roller coaster reviews shown.

There is also a feed available on each page for that chosen ride type, so that you can be told every time a coaster, dark ride, spin ride or water ride review is added to the site.

For this feature to work you will need both Javascript and cookies enabled.

Frequently asked questions
Saturday, March 03, 2007

Here we attempt to answer some of the more common questions that we're asked.

What is Coaster Kingdom?

Coaster Kingdom is a well established website that covers European theme parks, fairs, rides and coasters in great depth. It is comprised of massively in depth ride reviews, features and a blog which offers analysis of current coaster affairs.

Who are you?

We're not a theme park, we're not writers in any official capacity. We're just people who love theme parks and love writing about them. The team is made up of Marcus Sheen who started the site, John Phillips and Lewis Cox who help write for the site, and Roz Holbrook who helps with the blog and proof reading.

Why the UK bias?

Quite simply because that's where we live. As it goes, we don't think much of the UK coaster scene, but it is something we know a lot about, and hence have a lot to say. As often as possible we try and venture abroad, but as trips abroad are more whistlestop than those within the UK, it is harder to get enough photos and ride enough rides to make coverage worthwhile.

Why should I listen to you, opinions are subjective aren't they?

For the same reason that people listen to film reviews and car reviews. At the end of the day, they're all one persons opinion, but they're authorative, and put forward an in depth argument. It is easy to form your own opinion based on our synopsis.

When does Coaster Kingdom get updated?
  • The blog is updated whenever there is something to write about. It might be updated five times in a week, it might be updated five times a month
  • Our comprehensive ride reviews are added every few weeks
  • We also aim to add an in depth feature at least every month

How come this ride has the same rating as that ride?

Ratings credit rides depending on criteria unique to that ride. What makes Nemesis a great ride isn't necessarily what makes Phantom Manor a great ride.

Can I use your content on my website?

Photos yes, text no. But please get in touch with us before doing so - click the link on our homepage.

Do you respect park policies?

Of course. We only take photos on rides when we have permission, and only after riding several times so we know what to expect from the ride. On dark rides, we never use a flash. If rules state we cannot use a camera, we will not. All pictures are taken from publically accessible areas unless accompanied by park staff.

Changes at Coaster Kingdom
Sunday, February 11, 2007

Many changes have been made to Coaster Kingdom over the last month, mainly to give me more time to dedicate to writing as opposed to housekeeping the site, but also changes that will also make navigating and reading the site easier.

Your Reviews and commenting

  • Your Reviews is still a work in progress. From your point of view, it will remain much the same with the ability to fill in a form to add your review. Your Reviews should be back up and running in March.
  • Commenting will appear on as many pages as possible, ones where we think there's something to discuss or comment on

Layout

  • The entire site has been moved across to Blogger which means it is easier to update and should mean less dead links and less time dealing with housekeeping the site
  • Themed reviews are no more. All pages use the fast-loading template
  • Although the relevant links on the right hand side of the page are no more, there will be links at the foot of the review to similar rides and we will try and make sure relevant reviews are linked from within the articles when making comparisons
  • All thumbnails are the larger 250px wide and many reviews have new photos (see below)
  • We've improved the font clarity so that the site is easier to read
  • Labels will appear at the foot of most pages - clicking on this will bring up all relevant reviews (AltonTowers brings up all Alton Towers reviews on one page for example)

RSS feeds

  • Feeds were created in a mixture of ways beforehand, hence their unreliability. Feeds are now automatically created which should mean less intervention from us and more reliability
  • More feeds are available including ones covering Water Rides, Dark Rides, Coasters and Spin Rides, and we will introduce ones covering other seasonal topics such as Halloween

Housekeeping

  • There is still much work to be done. We have a list of out-of-date reviews that need rewritting which we will be attending to as often as possible
  • Old reviews that were no longer representative of the ride or our opinion of the ride have been removed. This includes all PortAventura and Parc Asterix reviews

About our ratings
Sunday, February 11, 2007

Our ratings summarise a ride review with a star rating of one to five - one being bad, five being good. Although every ride has a rating, it rates it on individual criteria unique to that ride. This is why you should not use the ratings to compare rides head-to-head. Because of this, it is entirely possible that a family ride can get the same rating as the most intense coaster in the world by virtue of the fact that they are rated against their own criteria.

Excellent

Our highest recommendation, any complaints about five star rides are trivial and you should make every reasonable effort to ride this coaster or attraction. Reviews marked as 'Coaster Kingdom recommends' are of outstanding merit.

Good

A great ride let down by just a few faults, but a ride that you should still make time to enjoy.

Average

A ride worth doing if you have the time, but isn't a stand out attraction and not something that is a particular draw.

Fair

While not a dreadful ride, this ride isn't worth making the effort to ride, and if you do, don't expect it to be a particularly memorable experience. It is likely this ride doesn't meet its own criteria.

Poor

Avoid. This ride has little or few discernible good points, is unenjoyable or misses the mark quite spectacularly. It is of little or no value to the park or fair that it's in.
