Yeah7 DVD review
Thursday, September 14, 2006

There are so many DVDs fighting for your attention nowadays, and most have eluded me - I'm one for riding the rides as opposed to salivating over them.

But I have seen enough to realise that they all seem to at least offer something different in what is becoming a saturated market; David Wraggs' offer in-depth video tours of mainly travelling rides from around Europe, while Robb Alvey's monstrous following will attest that their much-lauded product focuses more on on-ride video with Theme Park Reviews' associated high-jinks.

This is Phil Ariss' (AKA Yeah7's) first DVD, and showcases many of the finest parks and attractions in Europe.

Despite the trailers, and despite the sporadic updates, it was hard to have expectations, but the final product is a carefully-crafted masterpiece and brings to life everything that is special about the subjects he's filmed.

The DVD is, for all intents and purposes, free, and all that is asked is that if you order one, that you contribute towards the cost of the DVD and the postage - if you like the DVD, a tenner, for example, is a small price to pay while you can pay up to GBP 20 for similar titles.

The DVD includes some very sleek editing while avoiding the necessity to use effects just for the sake of it. The simple effect used on Crazy Shake at Nottingham's Goose Fair is a good example of how a simple effect can add to a moment instead of taking away from it.

The quality of filming, too, is outstanding. Artistic angles and very tight shots are accompanied by scene-setters and the odd bit of on-ride footage. I'm not a great fan of on-ride video, so am pleased that it is only used occasionally, but if arm-chair riding is your prerogative may I point you in the direction of the extras.

Set to a varied and eclectic soundtrack, the DVD is sharp, full of energy and wonderfully illustrates every asset of every park and fair, whether the gardens and history of Alton Towers, or the sense of exploration at Phantasialand.

But the absolute jewel in the crown has to be the segment on Dusseldorf's Rhein Kermis. It is everything I want to ever want to say to encourage people to go, just in video form.

Yes, there's Breakdance No.1, Alpina Bahn and Eurostar. There's Wild Wasser and the Wild Mouse - but Dusseldorf is more than just that, as is the DVD - it covers all the walk throughs such as Hof Freu Haus, the smaller rides such as Big Monster and the unparalleled electricity of possibly the finest fair in the world.

Keep watching, too, for the absolutely beautiful ending. If the hairs don't stand up on the back of your neck, go to a doctor because you're probably dead.

You can - and by god you will - go to Yeah 7's website and order a copy. Reward a labour of love by contributing generously as it is the best value DVD around.
