Odds good for Blackpool casino
Wednesday, May 24, 2006

Article imageFrom a list of 27 applicants for the UK's one-and-only 'super casino', Blackpool has today made a shortlist of eight, with the final decision due in December this year.

The BBC reports that along with Blackpool are joint-favourites with 'The o2', the redeveloped Millennium Dome in Greenwich, London, as well as the new Wembly Stadium, Cardiff, Manchester, Newcastle, Sheffield and Glasgow.

The new gambling laws for the UK will permit one so-called 'super casino' which will have unlimited jackpots, as well as 16 further small and large casinos with jackpot limits set at GBP 4,000.

The complex in Blackpool, pictured, is being proposed by the Hilton Group at a cost of GBP 600m and will include the casino, bars, shops and a conference centre on the site of the old Blackpool Central station.

The casino is an important part of Blackpool Council's geneneration plans which aim to turn the ailing resort into a UK version of Las Vegas.
